Five Fearless Gambling Industry Predictions for 2016

The igaming industry saw plenty of change take place over 2015. Between big deal mergers and acquisitions; and regulatory changes across the globe, the business is in a state of constant flux.

That state of never-ending change isn’t enough, however, to prevent us from making a few, bold predictions about what’s coming down the line for those work in the affiliate marketing and gambling industries. Here’s what we think might go down in 2016.

More Industry Consolidation – Life is a lot easier for big gaming operators than it is for smaller ones, so expect to see more igaming mergers and acquisitions in 2016. As long as gaming and financial regulators give them the OK, the many players on the igaming stage will continue to consolidate their forces.

Baccarat Bust Continues – Remember when a single month’s worth of Macau casino revenue was equal to a years’ worth of business on the Vegas Strip? Thanks to an anti-corruption crackdown, those days are gone for good and we don’t anticipate the return of Chinese whales to the baccarat tables anytime soon.

That’s bad news for land-based casinos in Las Vegas and even worse news for the casinos of Macau.

DFS Struggles in the States – The daily fantasy sports business had big dreams of dominating the American market when it flooded the airwaves with promises of million dollar jackpots last fall. These days, the industry is fighting for its life in a desperate bid to avoid being labelled as gambling or, even worse, sports betting.

Unfortunately, that’s not a fight the DFS business is likely to win. We predict a 2016 that’s full of legal fights in just about every state and patchwork of state-by-state regulatory schemes the industry will have to abide by if they want to keep operating in the US. In short, the DFS industry’s troubles are just getting started.

Europe Drags its Feet – The promise of igaming liberalization in the European Union has been a relatively unrealized dream for quite some time. Sure there’s been some movement, but there’s also been a tremendous amount of foot-dragging and bureaucratic nonsense, too. (Spain, we’re looking at you.)

We understand that Western European governments are loathe to give up their sports betting and lottery monopolies, and the tax revenue that goes with them. We also understand that until they are ready to really move on, as has been the case in some Scandinavian countries, liberalization will remain just a dream.

e-Sports Emerges – If you think that wagering on the outcome of a video game sounds far fetched, you’re clearly not aware of how popular e-sports have become. This, decidedly non-athletic, corner of the wagering world is the next frontier of the igaming world.

There are already plenty of big-time investors, like Mark Cuban, lining up for a piece of the e-sports pie and we expect that trend to continue in 2016.

Betfair Exits Canadian Market

Betfair recently announced that it is exiting the Canadian sports betting market and will no longer be taking action from Canadian players. Though no one is certain exactly what triggered the move, it’s believed that it has something to do with the company’s impending merger with Paddy Power.

The announcement, which was made in the form of an e-mail sent on December 23, was unusually vague for something coming from a mainstream operator and seemed designed to get lost in the pre-Christmas rush saying only:

On 14th January 2016 Canadian residents will no longer be able to place bets and Betfair shall close it’s [sic] website. All outstanding Sportsbook bets will be cancelled, you will no longer be able to place new exchange bets and all gaming products will be blocked. Please note that all outstanding Exchange bets will remain in place until 14th January 2016, so please ensure you manage any positions you have open in advance of this date.

Betfair’s merger status, and the fact that sports betting isn’t legal in most parts of Canada, were not mentioned in the e-mail.

The company’s actions are pretty standard for operators who are making, or looking to make, big moves in the international market. After all, grey market action isn’t something that gaming and financial regulators tend to look upon kindly. According to a report on Calvinayre.com, Paddy Power exited the Canadian lottery market in 2011 for similar reasons.

Though sports betting is currently not legal in Canada a few provinces, including Quebec, are considering allowing regulated wagering.

Betsson Shoots Down Euro-Bet Rumors

Is Betsson the target of a smear campaign designed to drive down its stock prices while lining the pockets of an American hedge fund operator? That certainly appears to be the case.

Late last week officials from Betsson were taken by surprise when rumors began circulating that not everything regarding the company’s $ 85 million purchase Euro-Bet last summer was on the up and up. That deal gave Betsson a nice foothold in the Georgian gaming market and was not considered controversial when it went through.

Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwell told a Danish language news site that the allegations were completely inaccurate and that he was comfortable that his company was in compliance with financial regulations throughout the process.

So who was behind this very targeted smear campaign? While no one has been charged with any wrongdoing in the matter, some reliable sources such as CalvinAyre.com have named Khvicha Makatsaria as the one.

Makatasaria, a Georgian businessman who has also been accused of money laundering allegations in Georgia, is a shadowy figure with a very low internet profile.

On Friday, Betsson released a statement denying any wrongdoing and suggested that whomever was behind it – and they did not mention Makatsaria – was likely working with investors looking to drive down the company’s stock price.

In the statement titled, Regarding incorrect information about Betsson, the company blames short sellers saying:

An anonymous document which contains false information and fictitious facts about the transaction is now circulating, most likely to defame Betsson…Betsson has reasons to believe that an individual, with the aim of earning personal financial gains by short selling the Betsson shares, wants to discredit the company. This is something Betsson takes very seriously, especially as the company has many small shareholders.

The statement went on to point out that Betsson officials have informed Swedish financial regulators of the situation and may pursue legal action against whomever was behind the rumor.

Who Bought the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Why Does it Matter?

Earlier this week, an unnamed buyer purchased the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s largest daily newspaper, for an astonishing $ 140 million. That may not sound like a story that impacts the igaming world, but it’s much more important than you might think.

The Review-Journal sale is particularly puzzling for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its sale price. After all, this same paper sold earlier this year as part of a package that included 7 other daily and 65 weekly papers for $ 102 million. Given the fact that daily newspapers aren’t exactly a growth industry, that sale price seems very high.

So why would someone, someone with a tremendous amount of disposable income, spend so much money on a newspaper? With national elections just a year away and Nevada occupying a spot as a prime swing state, the answer to that question is likely going to lead to politics.

It’s not much of a stretch to picture some deep-pocketed tycoon with Nevada connections and an interest in influencing national elections shelling out some pocket change for a new toy newspaper. And in the state of Nevada, billionaire Sheldon Adelson is a man who definitely fits that description.

Adelson has made no secrets of his desire to influence politics by way of political contributions and he usually gets his money’s worth. His representatives in Congress, which include plenty of politicians who aren’t from Nevada, do his bidding without question.

Adelson is also a major opponent of online gambling. Again, it’s not a stretch to consider Adelson purchasing a newspaper he could use to influence the outcome of US Presdential election, in Nevada anyways, to curry favor with a future US President (provided that President is a Republican).

It will be interesting to see how this story plays out over time. Can one media outlet really impact the outcome of an election? Is Adelson really the buyer and, if he is, will he get a quid pro quo from a future President in the form of the Restoration of the American Wire Act (RAWA)?

These are significant questions that could wind up having a significant impact on the US-facing online gambling industry.

New Jersey Online Gambling Posts Best Month Ever

After a couple years of middling results, New Jersey’s fledgling online gambling industry posted its highest ever revenue in November 2015. The impressive numbers, which were released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, are packed with tidbits that point to some genuine Garden State success stories.

The most important number from the November report is overall revenue from Jersey online casinos and poker rooms which clocked in at an impressive $ 13,222,543 for the month. That’s an amazing 51.2% increase over the previous year.

November’s good news comes on the heels of a very good October report that posted a then-record $ 10,950,532. In fact, this is third consecutive record-breaking month for Jersey igaming. (That November number is even more impressive given the fact that November has one less day in it than October.)

According to the report, the revenue increase was spread out fairly evenly between the online poker and casino sides of the business.

New Jersey Poker sites pulled in $ 1.95 million, which is up 4.3% over the previous month and 2.3% over the previous year. Some sources are suggesting that the boost was related to the World Series of Poker airing during the month. While that may have had an impact, the bigger trend in NJ poker is definitely pointing towards the positive.

The numbers on the casino side were even more impressive with total revenue clocking in at $ 11.2 million for the month. That’s up 64% over the previous year and 2.8% over the previous month.

Unfortunately, the good news did not carry over to the hard luck casinos along the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Brick-and-mortar casinos reported $ 204.3 million in revenue, a gain of 0.9% on the previous year.

Is This Free-to-Play App the Future of Daily Fantasy Sports?

The team at TheScore.com thinks that they’ve found the solution to the daily fantasy sports industry’s quagmire of legal problems in the form of QuickDraft, a free-to-play DFS app.

QuickDraft uses a novel, though not original plan for doing an end run around the United States’ ban on sports betting by keeping the element of chance, but removing the element of risk. They achieve this goal by offering everything any other DFS site offers, only they don’t charge entry fees.

Players compete for prize pools of between $ 100 and $ 1000 (USD). The site itself makes money, or will make money, from advertising. (As of this writing QuickDraft does not
According to Canadian attorney Michael Lipting, who spoke on the subject to the Canadian Globe and Mail, the concept is legally sound so long as players don’t lose anything:

As soon as you have risk consideration and prize, you are into a situation where there is gambling. If you offer a free site and people play for points and whoever has the most points gets a prize or cash, that is okay.

QuickDraft is a relatively recent convert to the concept of free-to-play and had, originally, planned a revenue model similar to DraftKings and Fan Duel. But in the wake of a potential regulatory avalanche heading their way in the US, the company shifted plans.

The relatively low prize pools could also serve to solve one of the DFS industry’s other big problems, sharks. Company officials are quick to point out that QuickDraft is not the place to go to win millions of dollars.

Or, as company COO Benjie Levy says, “We don’t do millionaire makers.”

Silk Road Fugitive Nabbed in Thailand

Roger Thomas Clark, the 54-year-old man who the Department of Justice says was one of the masterminds behind the Silk Road, is awaiting extradition to the US in a Thai jail cell.

Clark, who the DOJ believes is actually Canadian, was nabbed on December 3 in an operation that was conducted by Thai police and American Feds.

It’s believed that while Ross Ulbricht, a San Francisco resident who is currently serving a life sentence for his part in the Silk Road case, actually built the site, it was Clark who came up with the idea in the first place. (Clark is even credited with coming up with Ulbricht’s Pricess Bride-inspired nom de guerre, Dread Prate Roberts.)

In a statement to the press, FBI Assistant Director Diego Rodriguez heaped scorn on Clark and his attempts at fleeing justice saying:

The arrest of Roger Thomas Clark shows again that conducting criminal activities on the Dark Web does not keep a criminal out of law enforcement’s reach. As alleged, Clark was paid at least hundreds of thousands of dollars to act as a counselor to Ross Ulbricht’s black-market bazaar, Silk Road. Clark may have thought residing in Thailand would keep him out of reach of U.S authorities, but our international partnerships have proven him wrong.

By the time it peaked out, the Silk Road is believed to have put more than $ 200 million worth of Bitcoin in its founders’ pockets. The illicit drug bazaar was shut down in 2013, though several copycats have emerged since then.

If convicted on the charges he’s facing in the US, Clark could wind up spending 30 years behind bars.

Did an Australian Entrepreneur Create Bitcoin?

The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, may finally have been uncovered.

Earlier this week, both Wired and Gizmodo identified 45-year-old Australian entrepreneur Craig Steven Wright as the man behind the digital crypto-currency. Both sites point to a series of blog posts Wright made back in 2009 that refer to launching Bitcoin, as well as digital security keys that link Wright to Bitcoin’s earliest days. (Wright’s blog has since been taken down.)

One of those blogs, which was posted the before the Bitcoin was launched seems, at least to the layman, to put Wright in the running for, “Most-Likely-to-be-Satoshi” stated simply that he was going, “…launch Bitcoin tomorrow.”

Wright, who owns several Bitcoin related businesses, allegedly had help in the massive project from an American named Dave Kleiman. Kleinman, who died from a blood infection in 2013.

In an unrelated twist, early on Tuesday morning, Australian financial regulators raided Wright’s Golden Coast home. They haven’t said what they’re looking for if it’s related to his involvement with Bitcoin. (Bitcoin, it should be noted, are not illegal and inventing them would not, on it’s own, be enough to warrant a no-knock raid.)

If Wright is, in fact, the father of the Bitcoin he’s also a very rich man. It’s long been known that whoever invented the digital currency has somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000,000 of the first Bitcoin produced. At current trading prices, that would put Satoshi’s (Wright’s) personal fortune at right around $ 400,000,000 (USD).

Though all signs seem to point towards Wright at the father of Bitcoin, this isn’t the first time the media has jumped on a potential Satoshi. In early 2014, Newsweek was embarrassed after the person its reporters thought was the inventor of Bitcoin turned out to be an unemployed engineer who was just looking for a free lunch.

Daily Fantasy Sports Sites See Major Decline in Tournament Entries

US-facing daily fantasy sports sites have seen a major decline in tournament entries and guaranteed prize pools (GPP) since the insider trading scandal broke back in September.

According to a recently released analytics report from Adam Kreijcik, managing director of digital and interactive gaming at Eilers Research, action in GPPs is down as much as $ 10 million a week from the beginning of the season.

While Kreijcik points to scandals as being the major culprit, he’s quick to point out that isn’t the only factor at play here:

There are numerous explanations as to why these tournaments have been experiencing declines, not the least being the negative PR /extraordinary events surrounding the industry lately. However, we believe there may also be some larger fundamental issues at work, namely, a general shift towards ‘cash games’, which provide a much greater value proposition for the majority of all users.

Casual observers would probably also notice that the DFS decline coincides with a DFS advertising decline on television and radio. After absolutely wallpapering the media with advertisements early in the fall, both DraftKings and Fan Duel have cut their advertising budgets dramatically.

According to a report posted on LegalSportsReport.com, this is third straight week that neither Fan Duel nor DraftKings appeared on the list of top TV advertisers on US networks. That’s a major shift from earlier in the season when the two sites accounted for nearly 60% of all television advertising.

It’s also possible that US players have finished experimenting with DFS and most of them have opted to return to traditional, more competitive, fantasy football leagues that aren’t dominated by spreadsheet-wielding analytics nerds.

New Jersey OK’s Celebrity Endorsements for Online Gambling

New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement is, once again, brainstorming new ways to help Garden State online operators attract new customers.

Among the recent proposals being studied by the Division is a measure that would allow online gambling operators to use celebrity pitchmen to endorse their products.

So what’s the big deal about hiring a famous person to endorse an online poker room? As is so often the case when viewing the regulatory side of the business, there’s more to the story than it would seem.

From a regulator’s point of view, the practice of hiring celebrities to actually play at a casino or poker room as part of their endorsement package is potentially problematic. Specifically, the state is worried about whether or not the celebrities would get to keep the money they win and, if not, how that money would be reported.

The use of celebrities to endorse casinos is already a well-established practice, but the celebs most casinos use are anything but A-listers.

That’s all according to plan Borgata senior vice president Joe Lupo told the Associated Press. He said the company currently uses pitchmen who are, “not Hollywood types.” That said, he is open to the idea of using big names to get players in the door.

The proposal for celebrity endorsements is one several ideas the DGE is looking at to improve traffic for Garden State online gambling sites. Other ideas include allowing players to fund social gaming accounts through their real money site accounts; and giving operators more freedom as to where they base their servers.

Nevada Gaming Revenues Take October Dip

Nevada gaming revenues took a 2.9% dip in the month of October in, yet another, indication of the volatility of the worldwide casino gambling market. But, as is so often the case, there was a sprinkling of good news mixed in with the dismal monthly results.

According to numbers just released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, October revenue from Silver State casinos clocked in at $ 887 million for the month. That’s a slide of 2.9% over the previous year, but things were even worse on the fabled Vegas Strip where revenue was down 5.1% over the previous October.

As has been the case for a while now, a declining baccarat market has is one of the big factors driving down Strip revenue.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review Journal, was down 19.2% and came in at $ 78.3 million. The total amount wagered in those luxury baccarat rooms was $ 882 million, down 8.6%.

Not surprisingly, Strip properties that cater to Chinese whales, the MGM, Wynn and Venetian, have borne the brunt of the baccarat bust.

On the positive side, sports wagering was up for the month (which isn’t too surprising, given that October is peak NFL and NCAAF football season). In fact, October 2015 was the second biggest sports betting month Vegas has ever seen.

Nevada’s legal sportsbooks took in a little over half a billion dollars in wagers in October. That translated into around $ 33 million in profits.

All told, statewide gambling revenues dropped $ 52.3 million in Silver State coffers. That’s down 21.3% from last year. Overall, gambling tax revenues are down 4.4% for the fiscal year.

Ladbrokes Signs on as German Football Club Sponsor

Ladbrokes, one of the UK’s biggest bookmakers, has signed a sponsorship agreement with German soccer club SV Verder Bremen.

It’s the first time Ladbrokes has linked up with a big-time German football organization and could represent a major toehold for Ladbrokes in the volatile German sports betting market.

Details of the deal were not readily available as of this writing. According to a report on CalvinAyre.com, no one outside the organization knew about the deal until Ladbrokes logos appeared on the team’s Weserstadion field during their Saturday match against Hamburger SV.

There’s also no word on why SV Verder Bremen decided to leave their long time sponsor Tipico, a German sports betting operator, in favor of Ladbrokes. Their deal with Tipico had just expired after three years.

The team’s deal with Ladbrokes, however, seems to be a fairly short-term arrangement. On a German language business site Sponsors.de, Verder Bremen officials were hesitant to commit to a long-term relationship with Ladbrokes.

That said, team officials were saying all the right things about the deal to the German media and seemed pleased with the arrangement.

For Ladbrokes, the sponsorship deal is part of a larger effort to build a foothold in the German sports betting market. The company is one of just 20 operators to receive a German sports betting operators’ license in a process that was extremely long and drawn out.

Now that they’ve secured a deal with one of the country’s biggest football clubs, the UK operator can hopefully start cashing in on its German investment.

Fult Tilt Remissions Hit 92% Mark

It seems safe to say that most players whose Full Tilt Poker accounts were frozen on Black Friday did not expect to ever see that money again.

But, as of this writing, Full Tilt Poker is reporting that a whopping 92% of those players have been made whole by the poker giant and its parent company Amaya Gaming.

Of course for every, well-deserved, accolade Full Tilt is receiving for their handling of the remittance process, there are a few critiques that bubble up in online poker forums that are worth a closer look.

Specifically, former FTP players are still wondering why it took so long for their money to arrive, especially when the company had announced in October that the last undisputed claims had been settled.

Other players complained that they didn’t receive any warning that their money was arriving. (Perhaps they were planning a, “Welcome Home,” party for their long lost cash?)

Given the complexity of the remittance process and Amaya’s purchase of Full Tilt, it seems as though there’s really very little to complain about. After all, online gambling forums are rife with tales of lost funds that will never be resolved.

Players should also consider that this last batch of accounts, though undisputed, involved numerous complexities that made resolving them especially difficult.

While US players shouldn’t have to grovel to get back money they deposited in good faith in the pre-Black Friday era, they should also be grateful that Amaya stepped up and purchased Full Tilt.

If that hadn’t have happened, their money would likely be gone for good.

Mark Cuban Goes All In On eSports

Billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is one of esports’ most enthusiastic supporters and this weekend he went ahead and proved his devotion to the sport.

Cuban not only participated in a League of Legends tournament, he took a few shots at esports critics and, as always, found a way to inject himself directly into the story.

eSports, and eSports betting, are quietly building steam in a market where plenty of operators simply don’t take video games seriously. What those critics are missing is the fact that eSports is already a major business and that eSports betting is its natural offspring.

League of Legends is a worldwide phenomenon that’s captivated the same demographic group (young males) that the internet gambling business has long coveted. Last year’s League of Legends championship tournament in Seoul, South Korea attracted more than 40,000 fans in person and more than 32 million watching worldwide on the web.

When viewed in that context, its easy to understand why Cuban has ponied up millions of his own dollars in esports startups like Unikrn.

Cuban, who actually did pretty well in his debut (which was part of tournament to benefit anti-cyber bullying charities) and is generally regarded as a pretty knowledgeable player.

He even took time to defend esports from former ESPN commentator Colin Cowherd who says the game is not a real sport. In a statement made while leaving the tournament Cuban said:

I love Colin but he is an idiot when it comes to eSports. This is a real sport and people are going to figure it out really, really quick.

Currently, wagering on esports is legal in some countries, but not the United States.

Dutch Government OK’s Online Sports Betting (Some Restrictions May Apply)

The Dutch government is well on its way towards legalizing most forms of online sports betting. There are, however, a few restrictions that will remain in place as part of an effort to limit match fixing.

Under the proposed measures, which have actually been languishing in committee for over a year, Dutch residents will be able to place wagers with any regulated gaming site they choose. Currently, Dutchmen can only bet through the government lotto site, and only on games that are already in progress.

The new sports betting rules have the approval of the country’s coalition government, which consists of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and Labour Party (PvdA).

Holland’s sports betting liberalization is not, however, comprehensive. Some live betting situations, such as whether a red card will be pulled, will still be prohibited. The idea behind the live betting ban is to limit wagering to events that can’t easily be manipulated.

Apparently Dutch officials are very concerned about the possibility of criminal elements impacting game play and are doing everything they can to prevent that scenario. In an interview with nltime.nl, an official from the Dutch soccer association, KNVB, expressed his support for the measures saying:

Limiting gambling opportunities in this way is a profit for the sport. The important thing is that not criminals, but players on the field, determine how the match plays out. And these proposals contribute to that.

If approved, the new measures would take effect some time in 2017.
