Real Money Slot App for Apple Watch Offers Wrist-Side Gambling

Real money gambling could be coming to your wrist if a new slot app for the Apple Watch takes off.

Double Luck Nudge a new casino slot app for the Apple watch is looking to carve out new territory in the online gambling industry, on your wrist.

The app is the work of Chicago-based gaming companies LED Gaming and Purple Nudge. These companies worked together to build out a gambling app that combines the feel of real casino gaming with the emerging technology of haptics. (Haptics is all about applying touch to the interactive user experience.)

So Double Luck Nudge is pretty close to bringing that real money gambling experience to a whole new level, but it’s still missing one element, the real money. As is stands today, only a few US States even allow real money gambling and there’s no telling when, if ever, the others will get on board.

By that same token, maybe a little extra time isn’t such a bad thing for budding Apple Watch developers.

According to a recent survey of internet users conducted by Forbes.com, only 5% of North American internet users own a smart watch of any kind; and in Europe it’s only 4%. In the Asian-Pacific rim, the number of smart watch (not necessarily Apple Watch) users jumps up to 12%, but internet gambling is illegal there, too.

None of this is holding back the makes of Double Luck Nudge who say they’ve already built payment systems into their products and are ready to enter the regulated market.

All they need now is for the regulated market to be ready for them.

DraftKings Breaks Up with World Series of Poker

DraftKings is cutting its ties to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) as part of the continuing fallout from the recent insider trading scandal.

The move is a big blow for both DraftKings and the WSOP and is another indication of how serious the scandal’s aftermath has become.

DraftKings has been a major presence at the WSOP this year and with good reason. Online poker players have emerged as a major force in the daily fantasy sports world and company was eager to win their favor during the WSOP.

So far, their plan of gaining massive exposure during the WSOP was working extremely well. Viewers of the popular event couldn’t help but notice DraftKings’ logo plastered on every table and was offering WSOP buy-ins as a promotional tool that players were eating up.

Last week the Nevada Gaming Control Board barred DraftKings from operating in the state until it obtained a proper gaming license. That decision also put the kibosh on DraftKings’ WSOP sponsorship efforts.

In a statement to the New York Times, WSOP spokesman Seth Palansky said:

In light of last week’s news in Nevada, DraftKings asked us to cease any sponsorship activities around the remaining few W.S.O.P. events of the year, and we complied.

A spokesperson for DraftKings was significantly more blunt when describing the situation:

This is a result of daily fantasy sports no longer being authorized in Nevada.

So far, there’s no word on whether DraftKings will renew its WSOP sponsorship and/or whether it will apply for a Nevada gaming license.

Amaya Gaming Hits Brakes on Daily Fantasy Sports Expansion

Amaya Gaming is taking the regulatory hailstorm surrounding the daily fantasy sports industry very seriously and is pulling its StarDraft site from all but four US markets.

The company originally announced that it was merely moving out of the Nevada market, which is not requiring that DFS operators be licensed. They quickly added Florida to that list after the state launched a grand jury investigation into DFS.

Then, on Monday, Amaya pulled StarDraft from every US market except New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland and Kansas. A company official said those states were kept because they offered a favorable regulatory climate.

Amaya, which purchased the beleaguered PokerStars brand for $ 4.9 billion, is one company that is especially cautious when it comes to tangling with gaming regulators. They just spent millions of dollars securing a New Jersey online gaming license, and re-entry into the US market, and they’re not likely to rock the boat.

In a statement to Bloomberg News, a company spokesperson was very supportive of Nevada’s move to license DFS operators and of DFS regulation as a whole saying:

As a proponent of state regulation of daily fantasy sports, we respect the decision of the Nevada Gaming Control Board and no longer allow Nevada consumers to play for real money on StarsDraft. We are an advocate for strict state regulation of DFS and the recent activities at some companies underscore the need for state regulation.

While Amaya Gaming’s stance on DFS regulation may be noble, it’s not particularly risky. Fan Duel and DraftKings currently control more than 90% of the DFS market and most DFS players are probably not even aware of StarDraft’s existence anyways.

Regardless, Amaya has the right idea here. After all, staying on the right side state gaming commissions is always a good idea for any igaming operator.

Nevada Gaming Regulators Throw Down on Daily Fantasy Football

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) is throwing some serious cold water on the now beleaguered daily fantasy sports industry.

Late last week the NGCB banned DFS sites from operating in the Silver State until they’ve been licensed by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

By requiring DFS operators to be licensed like other sports betting operators, the NGCB has set up something of a Catch-22.

If DFS operators go ahead and apply for a license, they’ll be admitting what gaming regulators across the country have figuring out on their own; DFS is gambling. If they don’t apply, they’re frozen out of the market entirely.

There’s also the very real chance that other state gaming commissions will follow Nevada’s lead, as is so often the case, and require licensing on the state level.

Even worse, in this scenario, the currently DraftKings and Fan Duel will have to navigate a patchwork of state gaming commissions in order to operate in as many states as possible. (And there’s virtually no hope of getting any help from the do-nothing US Congress.)

Nevada’s actions are likely to be viewed as common sense by everyone but the DFS industry and reflect a general consensus that fantasy sports are, indeed, gambling. That doesn’t mean, however, that Nevada is anti-daily fantasy sports, as Gaming Commissioner A.G. Burnett pointed out in an in a statement to the Las Vegas Review Journal:

We’re not saying they can’t do (daily fantasy sports). We’re saying they can do this as long as they have a gaming license.

It’s also expected that the Nevada Congressional delegation will be calling hearing on DFS in the near future.

In short, the day of reckoning for DFS operators seems to have definitely arrived.

States Move to Regulate (and Tax) Daily Fantasy Sports

The daily fantasy sports (DFS) industry seems dead set on proving the old saying, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity,” as a hopelessly dated anachronism.

Just one week after news of a major insider trading scandal splashed across the web, the industry has attracted the attention of revenue hungry state politician.

This week, lawmakers in both California and Massachusetts have said they’re interested in making certain daily fantasy sports sites are properly taxed. To call this terrible news for anyone with a financial interest in this sector of gambling industry is something of an understatement.

In Massachusetts, House Speaker Robert DeLeo said, flatly, that the state should be getting, “its fair share,” of those piles of DFS revenue. He’s joined by the State’s Attorney General, Maura Healey, who is already investigating the legality of daily fantasy sports in Massachusetts.

On the other side of the country in California, Assemblyman Adam Gray has launched his own investigation into the legality of DFS. In a statement reported on by CalvinAyre.com the politician said:

Daily fantasy sports is happening in California, whether we like it or not. This is an unregulated industry, whose revenue is in the billions of dollars. All other gaming activities in the state are subject to regulations that ensure a safe environment for gambling.

Gray went on to use the investigation to pitch the value of online gambling in the Golden State.

So what are the states looking for when they go out investigating?

For the most part, they’re trying to figure out exactly, as the gentleman from Massachusetts said, how the state can get its fair share. Watch for a whole flurry of new taxes to hit DFS by this time next year.

Is Eastern Europe Internet Gambling’s Next Hot Spot?

What’s the hottest internet gambling market in the world right now?

No, it’s not Asia.

The regulated version of that market is still in the fetal stage. Maybe one day it will pop, but not this year.

How about Western Europe?

Sorry, that’s not it either. Thanks to piles of red tape and bureaucracy that market just isn’t living up to its full potential. Sure there’s money there, but operators can have a heck of a time just obtaining a license in countries like Germany and Spain.

No, if you really want to go where the action is – or is going to be – keeping heading east to the countries that once comprised the Soviet Union.

Thanks to a convergence of favorable population demographics and revenue hungry governments, Eastern Europe is primed for an internet gambling Renaissance. That’s a point that Romanian writer and professional gambler, Mihai Voinea, made recently on CalvinAyre.com titled, The State of Online Gambling in Eastern Europe.

Voinea points out that living standards in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc have been steadily improving over the past years. That, combined with government entities that are keen to open new tax revenue streams, have made Eastern Europe a ripe target for operators that are looking to break new ground.

Any internet gambling executive who is wondering if the average Eastern European resident will be a good customer should site down and chat with Voinea. He says the average Eastern gambling mentality is all about high risk, high rewards. Even better, in his eyes, is their willingness to spend a high percentage of their income on gambling.

As Eastern Europe matures as an internet gambling market, casino affiliates who can find a niche – and create localized content – could find themselves in a very sweet spot.

Australian Football League Promoting Responsible Gambling

The cozy relationship between Australian Football League (AFL) clubs and the sports betting industry has long been a flash point for Australia’s vocal anti-gambling forces.

That’s why a number of AFL clubs are getting on board with a new responsible gambling charter sponsored by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.

AFL clubs, which are very different from the billion dollar operations of the NFL or Premiere League, have long been criticized for accepting sponsorship and fundraising money from gambling operators.

Aussie gambling foes are particularly concerned that these sponsorship deals are having a negative impact on Australian children when they watch their favorite player sporting a sportsbook logo.

That’s where the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF) comes into the picture. The group recently introduced a new program called, Gambling’s Not A Game designed to help separate the AFL from the gambling industry.

Under the terms of the charter, AFL are asked to sever sponsorship deals with gambling operators; avoid using gambling for fund raising activities; and to keep gambling machines away from children.

In a statement to the press, as reported on by CalvinAyre.com, VRGF CEO Serge Sardo says his group isn’t anti-gambling, they just want don’t want children exposed to gambling at an early age. Their efforts have met with support from The St. Kilde; Essendon; Hawthorn; Collingwood; North Melbourne; Melbourne Victory; and the Western Bulldogs clubs.

St. Kilda CEO Matt Finnis told reporters that his club is committed to the pillars of responsible gambling and was committed to the foundation’s plan.

Of course commitment only goes so far when there’s money involved. A number of Australian gambling foes have already pointed out that the same clubs that are backing away from sports betting are still profiting from poker machines at their facilities. They point out that pokies at facilities owned by the Hawthorn Club, for example, pull in about $ 22 million a year.

So far, a total of 140 Australian sporting groups have signed on to the Responsible Gambling Charter.

PokerStars Muzzles Third Party Software

PokerStars is taking aim at third party software products and heads up displays (HUDs) that are giving data-minded card sharks an online poker edge. The policies are part of a larger effort to make online poker sites more friendly towards casual players.

PokerStars Sit & Go and Tournament Manager Baard Dahl introduced the proposed changes in a long, and very technical, forum posting on TwoPlusTwo.com late last week. The gist of his statement is that PokerStars isn’t looking to ban all third party poker programs, HUDs, and other reference materials just the most sophisticated versions.

Under the new policy, simple reference programs like Nash Charts, which are similar to the basic strategy black cards you’ll find in every casino gift shop on the planet, will be allowed. What won’t be allowed are the kinds of highly sophisticated Hand or Situation Analyzers that provide real-time data based on previous outcomes.

Dahl made it clear that the proposed changes are only the beginning of what could be a major overhaul of the online poker world’s relationship with third party software. He’s specifically targeting seating programs that target weak players saying:

We are going to be looking at prohibiting all seating scripts in the future once this round of revisions has settled down and we are able to discuss the most effective solutions to limit their ongoing usage.

While hardcore poker players argue that real-time hand analyzers and seating scripts are just part of the game, poker operators think they’re bad for business. They think analytics programs are scaring off new players and will, ultimately, dry up the global player pool and are furiously fighting to keep them in check.

Other industry players, including the MicroGaming Poker Network, are implementing changes designed to thwart analytics programs such as allowing players to frequently change their screen name.

In short, this is an issue that sites like PokerStars need to get in front of, and stay in front of, if they want to insure their own long-term survival.

NY Attorney General Launches Daily Fantasy Sports Inquiry

New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has launched a formal inquiry into the daily fantasy sports (DFS) industry in the wake of the insider trading. It’s the first, but not likely the last, piece of fall out from the scandal involving DFS employees winning big bucks on rival DFS sites.

The Attorney General launched the inquiry with a letter to the CEO’s of DraftKings and Fan Duel requesting information about how the companies compile and store data, in addition to questions about who has access to this information.

Not surprisingly, the AG’s letter focuses specifically on the player lineup data that’s at the heart of the scandal that’s threatening to bring major changes to the DFS world.

In response to the scandal, which involved a leaked player lineup percentage chart and a $ 350,000 Fan Duel tournament win by a DraftKings content manager, DraftKings and Fan Duel have both temporarily banned their employees from playing on rival sites.

But the AG’s letter was not the only bad news that hit the daily fantasy sports biggies as a result of the scandal.

ESPN announced that it will be scaling back DFS content on its properties, though it will continue to accept advertising from them. Given the amount of coverage DFS receives on ESPN sports talk shows like Mike and Mike and The Dan Patrick Show, this is a very big deal.

Executives at DraftKings and Fan Duel have denied any wrongdoing in the matter. It’s worth noting that the DraftKings employee who touched off the scandal, Eric Haskell has not been charged with any crime connected to the scandal.

For daily fantasy sports industry watchers, the fallout surrounding the insider trading scandal isn’t particularly surprising. Politicians and regulators have been itching for an opportunity to put DFS under the regulatory microscope and now they’ve got it.

Both DraftKings and Fan Duel representatives have said the companies will be cooperating with Attorney General Schneiderman’s investigation.

Do Daily Fantasy Sports Employees Benefit from Insider Information?

Are employees at daily fantasy sports (DFS) sites using insider information to get an edge on big money tournaments? That’s the question that’s being discussed on DFS forums after player lineups for a popular tournament were inadvertently leaked on the web last week.

DFS players became aware of the drama after DraftKings written content manager Ethan Haskell picked up $ 350,000 in Fan Duel’s popular Millionaire Maker Tournament.

Haskell’s is also the person who inadvertently leaked lineup data showing the percentage of DFS owners who started each player in the tournament. In the hands of an experienced numbers cruncher (and they are legion in the DFS world) advance access to this sort of data could be devastating to fair competition.

That’s why Haskell’s big win led to some seriously raised eyebrows and a furious discussion about whether DFS employees are using insider information to win tournaments at other DFS sites.

In particular, many DFS players were surprised to find out that DFS employees are not prohibited from playing on other DFS sites. Current employees of the two biggest DFS sites, Draft Kings and FanDuel, are free to play on any DFS site except their own.

As it stands Haskell has not been accused of any wrongdoing and there’s no evidence that he acted inappropriately or illegally.

At the same time, the Haskell situation is turning into yet another dark cloud over the booming daily fantasy sports industry.

As DFS finds mainstream success it’s also finding armies of new critics who say it’s nothing but thinly veiled sports betting. Just this week, before the Haskell story broke, the New York Times Editorial Board ran an editorial titled, Rein in Online Fantasy Sports Gambling.

The daily fantasy sports industry is going through some serious growing pains this season and it will be interesting to see what it looks like this time next year.

Online Poker Client Malware Lets Hackers Peek at Player Hands

Online poker sites are being targeted by a new kind of malware that allows hackers to actually view their opponents’ hands while the game is being played.

The malicious program is actually a Trojan Horse named Odlanor that piggybacks onto poker clients at sites like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker when players download common programs like, Tournament Shark, Poker Calculator Pro, Smart Buddy, Poker Office.

Once it has its claws in its victims PC, Odlanor allows hackers to take a screen shot of the opponents’ hands. To say that this gives hackers an edge in the game is something of an understatement.

The name Odlanor was given to the malware by Slovakian-based team of computer scientists at an outfit called ESET, that discovered it.

In an interview with TechTimes, lead ESET researcher Robert Lipovsky said he thinks the malware originated in Russia sometime last spring, and has effected about 1,000 – mostly Eastern European – players so far.

One group that isn’t so sure about Lipovsky’s claims is the online poker industry itself. Representatives from PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker have denied these reports and say they haven’t heard any reports from players about malware-effected games. (Of course there’s a good chance that the infected players have no idea that they’ve been scammed.)

That said, both companies suggest that players keep their anti-virus software updated and avoid downloading programs from sources that can’t be verified. Players who think their poker clients have been infected are advised to cease play and contact the operator immediately.
