Italian Internet Gambling Posts Revenue Gains

Business is booming for the Italian internet gambling with companies reporting solid gains for the first half of 2015. The new numbers aren’t just good for the internet gambling industry as a whole, they’re also a rare European gaming liberalization success story.

The big news for Italian facing operators and affiliates is that overall igaming revenues in Italy was up 9% over the previous year. Operators reported €398 million ($ 436 million (USD) in earnings for the first half of 2015.

Much of that gain, according to a report on CalvinAyre.com, came from the country’s robust online sector which was up 24% over the previous year.

On the sports betting side, Italian online bookmakers reported massive gains, including a turnover of €1.3 billion ($ 1.42 billion USD) – that’s up a whopping 90% over the same period in 2014. Revenue at those sites rose 18% to €126 million ($ 138 million USD).

Unfortunately, not every sector of the Italian internet gambling market was in the black for the first half of 2015.

The long suffering Italian online poker vertical reported a revenue drop of 15% to €82 million ($ 89 million USD). Revenue from cash games, a traditional cash cow, was down 22% to just €6.1 million ($ 6.8 million USD).

The one bright spot for the poker vertical was the tournament sector where revenue was up 15% from this time last year.

Unfortunately, the Italian internet gambling boom might not last for an extended period. Italian lawmakers are considering a host of bills that, if passed into law, could seriously impact the industry’s bottom line.

At the same time, the addition of new market players, thanks to market liberalization, is a success story that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Phil Ivey Takes on Borgata with One More Lawsuit

Poker legend Phil Ivey is counter suing the Borgata Hotel and Casino over allegations of destroyed evidence in his ongoing case of, alleged, edge sorting.

Ivey, and a co-defendant claim that the Borgata acted illegally when it destroyed the cards that had been used in Ivey’s controversial $ 9 million baccarat winning streak at the AC casino.

The two men say the casino’s current lawsuit against them, a lawsuit attempting to reclaim their allegedly ill-gotten winnings, should be tossed out under New Jersey’s frivolous lawsuit statutes.

In Ivey’s view, the loss of the cards – the same cards whose flaws and imperfections he committed to memory in order to beat the casino in a $ 100,000 a hand game of baccarat – cripples his defense against the casino operator. (Why Ivey can’t just remember the cards is another question entirely.)

The Borgata, of course, says Ivey and company are completely in the wrong and that edge sorting is fraud, not advantage playing.

By the way, that’s the same argument Crockford’s casino in London used in their case against Ivey’s UK edge sorting drama. In that case, Ivey was forced to return more than $ 7 million dollars in winnings in a story that’s almost identical to this one.

Ivey’s edge sorting routine seems to revolve around spending an evening playing with a deck of cards and requesting that those same cards be used in subsequent sessions. All the while, he’s memorizing small imperfections on the cards that allow him to know exactly which cards are being dealt.

No matter who comes out on top, it’s safe to say that Phil Ivey probably won’t be welcome in the world’s baccarat rooms anymore.

Paddy Power Pushes it Too Far with Aussie Sex Offender Ad

A billboard featuring a convicted sex offender has proven to be too much for Paddy Power in Australia, Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker.

The edgy advertisement, which has been torn down and destroyed, included a large photo of former Aussie TV host, and convicted sex offender, Rolf Harris smiling and waving. A caption on the billboard read, “The only Aussie we don’t want to get out.”

Harris’ image was part of a promotion for the Ashes Test at Lord’s cricket match between Australia and England.

The offensive billboard immediately drew the ire of social media users and that triggered Paddy Power’s retreat. In a statement to the press, a Paddy Power spokesman said:

We decided that, on balance, although potentially amusing for the cricket fan, the sentiment of the advert crossed the line and had the potential to cause offence. It’s not often Paddy Power make this kind of decision but in this instance we believe we made the right call not to run it. We can confirm that we will be destroying the advert and it will never be released in public.

To say that Paddy Power doesn’t, “make this kind of decision,” often is something of an understatement. The company is well known for pushing the limits of good taste in its advertising, especially when it comes to celebrities.

Last year the company came under fire for promoting wagering on the outcome of the Oscar Pretorious trial in South Africa. That particular campaign earned the distinction of generating more complaints with UK advertising regulators than any other ad in 2014.

Caesars Stock Tanks on Creditor Lawsuit News

Caesars Entertainment Corporation stock took a massive plunge this week after a judge’s decision to allow creditor lawsuits against the casino operator to proceed.

At one point during trading on Wednesday, when the decision was announced, Caesars stock plummeted a whopping 60% to just $ 3.30. By the end of trading, the company’s stock was back up in the $ 5 range, but even that represented a 30% loss over the previous day.

The impetus for the crash was a decision from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Benjamin Goldgar forcing the company to defend itself against a boat load of creditor lawsuits. All told, the combined lawsuits add up to more than $ 11 billion USD.

At the heart of this legal drama is Caesars’ desire to break up into two operating units – a move creditors say is being used to avoid paying out settlements to smaller creditors.

Under the terms of Caesars’ plan, the company’s two units would consist of one to run the casinos and one to manage the land they rest on. This would allow the casino operator to pay just pennies on the dollar to most of its smaller creditors.

Obviously, this plan doesn’t sit too well with what the courts call, junior creditors. They knew the plan to protect Caesars’ assets would be paid for mostly from their own pockets and the judge in the case agrees with them.

It’s tough to say exactly how the junior creditor lawsuits will turn out but one thing is for certain, the Caesars Entertainment Corporation bankruptcy case is still a long ways from its conclusion.

Yahoo’s Daily Fantasy Sports ‘Guarantee’ Under Heavy Fire

Yahoo! is under fire from daily fantasy sports players who say their prize guarantee isn’t delivering on its promises. Even worse, Yahoo’s broken promises could spell trouble for the entire DFS industry.

Yahoo! made headlines last week when it rolled out its new DFS product along with a prize guarantee that was sure to be appealing to hardcore players.

The guarantee suggested that the former search giant would pay out full prizes on DFS tournaments, no matter how many players actually signed up. That’s how it was supposed to work but that’s not how things worked out at all.

According to a report on CalvinAyre.com, Yahoo! “guaranteed” to pay out $ 22,000 on an MLB tournament last week that was expected to attract 10,000 players. When only 2,944 players actually signed up, Yahoo! paid out less than $ 8,000 total.

That meager payout isn’t sitting well with players and it could, potentially, cause headaches for the entire DFS business.

DFS sites are considered a game of skill and were granted an exception from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) based on that status. That status could be in jeopardy if DFS sites begin advertising guaranteed tournament payouts without actually following through on them.

In this case, according to CalvinAyre, Yahoo! was covered because they fronted the tournament entry fee for participants.

That said, this isn’t something the DFS industry should be doing on a regular basis. Not only does it impact player confidence, it’s likely to draw the (unwanted) attention of State Attorney Generals looking to score points by taking down an internet gambling site.

Yahoo! is still on a learning curve when it comes to DFS and it’s very likely that they’ll adjust their policies based on this incident.

888 Holding Wins Bwin.Party Battle

888 Holdings is closing a deal to purchase Bwin.Party for $ 898 millon (GBP) ($ 1.8 billion USD). The deal ends months of wheeling and dealing by Bwin.Party’s potential suitors and leaves 888 rival GVC Holdings in the cold.

According to MorningStar UK, 888′s offer for Bwin.Party was actually less than GVC’s offer, but offered more long-term value and less risk to shareholders. At its core, 888′s bid offered 39.45p cash and a fraction of a new 888 share for each current Bwin.Party share.

In a statement to the press, one of Bwin.Party’s Directors described the deal as follows:

areful consideration, that 888′s offer provides a higher degree of certainty for Bwin.Party shareholders and that GVC’s modest incremental premium to 888′s offer is not sufficient for the Bwin.Party board to recommend GVC’s proposal over 888′s offer.

It should also be noted that Amaya Gaming, the Quebec-based owner of PokerStars, helped finance the Bwin.Party deal. It’s believed that they may eventually wind up taking control of the company’s sports betting assets.

So what exactly is it about Bwin.Party that made it so attractive to 888 and GVC? In 888′s case, the company’s robust technology business, based in its “Studios” division, may have been the key asset in the deal. Many analysts are speculating that 888 may spin off Studios as its own, standalone business unit.

No matter what their reasoning behind the purchase, 888 stands to make huge gains from the acquisition. If nothing else, the combined UK market share of the two companies is a whopping 56%.

In short, the UK igaming industry has a new giant to content with.

Daily Fantasy Sports Update: What Are the Players Thinking?

A new survey of daily fantasy sports (DFS) players sheds some light on who’s playing DFS; where they’re playing DFS; and a whole lot more.

If you’re considering a move into this fast growing corner of the online gambling world, this is information you need to know.

The study titled, Daily Fantasy Sports Player Survey – 2015 was conducted by Ellers Research between June 18 and July 9 of this year. Over 1,400 DFS players were surveyed in the effort.

When it comes to demographics, the average daily fantasy sports player is exactly who you think he is; a white male between 25-35 years old. In fact, 98% of DFS players are male and 91% them are white.

While these young men do enjoy their DFS, they only have so much time and effort they can devote to it on a weekly basis. Most players only spend 10-20 a week on DFS research

Ellers also found that most DFS players have only been at it for less than two years and found out about DFS through a friend.

In most cases, that friend referral sent the player to either DraftKings or FanDuel. In fact, slightly more than half of all players don’t even bother with other sites.

When it comes to spending habits, most DFS players are hardly what you’d call whales. In most cases, DFS players have a weekly roll of around $ 100 and only like to spend around $ 5 per game.

As for perceptions, 66% of DFS players see it as a legal alternative to gambling, though 94% of them would continue if it were to suddenly become illegal.

That, as it turns out, is something they’re pretty familiar with from their online past. Just about half of current DFS players used to play online poker.

In short, the daily fantasy sports world is populated with young, but experienced, players who know what they’re doing and are seriously committed their new found passion.

Yahoo! Entering Real Money Daily Fantasy Sports Market

Yahoo! is looking to revive their flagging fortunes with a major foray into online gambling’s hottest vertical, real-money daily fantasy sports.

Besides shaking up the ultra-competitive, and fast-growing, world of daily fantasy sports, Yahoo’s move represents the first mainstream US company to venture into real-money online gambling.

Despite their failings as a search engine (they currently hold less than 10% market share) Yahoo! is actually something of a power house in the world of sports. Both Yahoo! Sports and Yahoo! Fantasy are a couple of the only bright spots on the company’s roster.

In a statement to the New York Times, Yahoo!’s Chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt said daily fantasy are what the people want:

We try to use the sports fans as a compass. We’re focused on what do sports fans want and how do we delight them.

And if Yahoo! happens to profit from entry fees and advertising in the process, that’s just icing on the cake.

Yahoo!’s entry into the real-money daily fantasy sports market isn’t likely to be praised by the industry’s two current biggest players; DraftKings and FanDuel. Both companies are currently valued at over $ 1 billion and are in a desperate race to secure new players and establish themselves as the top dog in the only legal way to wager on sports in America.

No matter which daily fantasy sports site comes out on top, the real winner in this market will likely be the NFL. America’s dominant sports league has benefited tremendously from the country’s estimated 50 million fantasy football players. With the rise of daily fantasy sports, the league can potentially see new profit streams from selling data to fantasy sites; new eyeballs on their products; and a slew of new promotions.

In short, Yahoo!’s entry into the daily fantasy sports is a major boost both for Yahoo! and the entire fantasy sports industry.

GVC Holdings Very Close to Closing Bwin.party Takeover Deal

GVC Holdings is getting very close to closing its blockbuster bid to take over Bwin.party. If they’re successful, the deal could dramatically change the face of the online poker industry.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg.com reported that GVC had teamed up with Amaya Gaming (owners of PokerStars) to offer Bwin.party 906.5 million-pound ($ 1.4 billion USD) for the whole company. That comes out to 110 pence per share and is an 11% boost over the the stock’s current trading price.

GVC Holdings CEO, Kenneth Alexander broke out his best businessman man buzzwords when describing the deal telling Bloomberg News:

Based on our experience with the successful Sportingbet acquisition and restructuring, we believe that the potential combination of GVC and bwin.party would result in substantial financial and operating synergies and represent an excellent opportunity for both GVC and bwin.party shareholders.

Part of that value for shareholders would come from the fact that GVC wouldn’t be ponying up the entire $ 1.4 billion. They’ll be getting some financial assistance from Quebec-based Amaya Gaming. Amaya is no stranger to massive deals, last year they put up billions of their own to acquire PokerStars.

If the deal goes through, GVC would maintain control of Bwin.party’s sports betting business, while Amaya would take control of the casino side of the business.

All parties are in agreement that Bwin.party is in pretty good financial shape. In an announcement to the press, the company said that Bwin.party’s three month financial performance was, “in line with expectations.”

This is, by no means, a done deal. Bwin.party is definitely entertaining offers from other suitors though Alexander says he’d be, “staggered,” if they deal didn’t go through.

Nevada Gambling Revenue Tops $1B for May 2015

Nevada gaming revenues topped $ 1 billion in May, thanks to a big boost from the Mayweather-Pacquio fight and increased action on slot machines and table games.

The final number for May came in at $ 1.003 billion when the month was done. That’s a 3.3% increase over the same period last year, which is even better than it sounds.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, casino revenue in May, 2014 was up 8.2% over May, 2013. On the Strip that year revenues were up a whopping 17.3% that year.

Nevada’s sweet May numbers, of course, got a massive boost from the Mayweather-Pacquio fight, which brought tourists from all over the world to the Strip. Fight night lifted Nevada’s casino numbers into the stratosphere (the figurative top end of the revenue scale, not the famous hotel/casino).

According to Stifel Nicolaus Capital Markets gaming industry analyst, Steven Wieczynski, fight night was a gift that’s going to keep giving, especially to smaller casinos that don’t have the benefit of high rolling baccarat players:

We believe the second quarter is off to an encouraging start for Strip operators, particularly those less dependent on the high-end internationally sourced baccarat segment.

Additionally, we would note strength in traditionally domestically sourced games often produces healthier returns across the various nongaming segments, including lodging and food and beverage, which should benefit Strip operators’ second quarter results.

Speaking of baccarat, that’s an area where things are really not looking as good as they once did. Thanks to a crackdown on corruption in China, the number of high rolling, international whales in Vegas’ vaunted baccarat rooms is down dramatically. Baccarat revenue was down a stunning 36% over the previous year.

While May turned out to be a great month for Nevada, they can’t bank on Mayweather-Pacquio every month. That said, June’s numbers will be the ones to really watch.

e-Sports Betting’s Latest Investor: Mark Cuban

Billionaire Mark Cuban is going on all in on gambling’s hottest new vertical, e-sports betting. The colorful owner of the Dallas Mavericks is making a big investment in a site called Unikrn (pronounced, “unicorn”) and that’s great news for the rapidly growing e-sports business.

Unikrn is one of a number of start ups that are focusing on the e-sports market, but they’re doing it with a twist. Not only can players play in competitive video game leagues, they can also bet on the outcome of those games. (Though it’s not clear as to whether players can bet on their games. Sorry Pete Rose, we’ll check up on that one for you.)

There is, however, a pretty big catch. Unikrn’s wagering component is only available to punters in countries where e-sports betting is actually legal. That means that the massive US video gaming market is currently off-limits to Unikrn.

That limitation, however, has not slowed down Cuban’s interest in the budding market.

In a statement to the press that was quoted on Inc.com, Cuban said:

I only put my name on the companies that I feel will be successful, truly advance an industry, and have a leadership team that I respect Unikrn fits all these requirements.

Indeed, enthusiasm for e-sports and e-sports betting is reaching something of a fever pitch amongst the tech and investment crowds. That same Inc.com article quotes a report predicting e-sports will be as big as the NFL by the year 2017. The NFL currently pulls in revenue around $ 9 billion a year.

No matter how large it actually gets, the e-sports and e-sports betting markets are clearly on the rise.
