Hackers Hit Irish National Lottery Site

Hackers hit the Irish National Lottery with a major distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack last week that disabled the lottery’s website, as well as free-standing ticket kiosks.

Though the attack was short lived, only about two hours total, its scope should be enough to leave lottery officials plenty shaken. After all, most DDoS attacks focus, and impact, an operator’s website. The fact that this attack shut down free-standing sales kiosks is deeply disturbing.

Officials at Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), the company that runs he Irish National Lottery, credits a robust DDos defense system for stopping the attack within hour of its start.

In a statement to the press, PLI officials stressed that the attack was short-lived and did not cause widespread damage saying:

The issues were resolved by the National Lottery’s DDoS protection systems, limiting disruption and restoring all operations within two hours. This incident is still under investigation. However, we can confirm that at no point was the National Lottery gaming system or player data affected.

The attack took place just hours ahead of a weekly drawing that had swelled up to €12 million ($ 12.97 USD), making it the lottery’s biggest jackpot in more than 18 months. Hackers frequently target operators, especially bookmakers, in the hours ahead of large events.

Attacking during busy times gives them more leverage when they eventually demand money to halt their activities. As of this writing, PLI has not commented on whether the hackers approached them with any particular demands.

That said, the Irish National Lottery will offer another very large jackpot this week and officials are bracing themselves for another potential DDos attack at that time.

Bookmakers Halt Suspicious Australian Open Wagering

Just one week after the tennis world was rocked by a serious match fixing scandal, officials in Australia have suspended wagering on a match due to suspicious betting patterns.

Security personnel at Pinnacle Sports were the first to notice that a large amount of cash on a fairly obscure match up between Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot; and Lara Arruabarrena and David Marrero.

Though  Arruabarrena and Marrero were heavy favorites to win, a large amount of late money on Hlavackova and Kubot drove down the odds on the favorites. In the hours leading up to the match, odds on the favorites dropped by 18% for no reason besides volume of wagers.

Officials from the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) were notified of the irregularities, but have not yet commented on them.

Hlavackova and Kubot, on the other hand, defended their win. In a statement to the press, Hlavackova took umbrage with the suggestion that that his opponents may not have been giving it their all saying:

It’s not very comfortable to think that we didn’t win the match on our terms. We played our best [yesterday], we did very well and we won. So it’s a bit not comfortable to be questioned if someone else was not playing 100 per cent or something.

Marrero and Arruabarrena also denied any wrongdoing and pointed out that Marrero was suffering from an injured knee. (There’s no indication as to whether or not Marrero’s knee injury was made public before the match.)

Given the controversy surrounding alleged match fixing that’s dogged the tennis world over the past week, Pinnacle’s quick action in halting a match with suspicious betting patterns isn’t much of surprise.

As of this writing, this has been the only match that’s garnered a halt in betting at this year’s Australian Open, though it might not be the last.

Phil Ivey Readies Daily Fantasy Sports Site

Phil Ivey is, arguably, the best poker player in the world and now he’s getting ready to take on a new challenge, daily fantasy sports. The master card player is all set to launch his own daily fantasy sports site on the iTeam Network sometime next month.

Details about Ivey’s new venture are still pretty vague, but given its presence on iTeam, a few conclusions can be drawn.

For starters, iTeam is a Las Vegas-based daily fantasy sports platform that allows clients to create their own branded, DFS sites. (Think of it as the DFS equivalent of poker skins.)

Ivey’s new project is a pretty clear example of the growing overlap between poker and daily fantasy sports. Poker players of all stripes have found that the same analytical skills they use in the poker room are very useful in DFS.

That connection wasn’t lost on iTeam Network CEO Gabe Henderson who said in a press release:

There is a large crossover between poker players and DFS players. Adding the Phil Ivey brand will substantially increase network-wide player liquidity and prize pools. We have already started an aggressive marketing and execution plan in which PhilIveyDFS users will be able to compete immediately for more than $ 20,000 in weekly pro basketball contests and interact directly with Phil.

Ivey’s entry into the DFS world comes at a time when the US-facing industry is under siege from a blizzard of legal challenges and its market is shrinking on a daily basis. As of this writing, nearly one in four Americans live in a jurisdiction that’s banned daily fantasy sports.

French Gambling Market Rises on Sports Betting Success

2015 was a very good year for the French gambling with major revenue gains driven by a solid performance from the sports betting sector.

According to a report on CalvinAyre.com, the Franco online gambling that translates into €756 million Euro ($ 819.2 million USD).

As mentioned, the key driver behind the solid earnings report was a very good year for French bookmakers. Their turnover of €1.44 billion ($ 1.56 billion USD) was up a full 30% over the previous year.

On the revenue end of the numbers, things looked pretty rosy as well. All sources report that revenue from sports betting topped the €54 million ($ 58.52 million USD) mark for the fourth quarter alone. For the year, sports betting revenue hit the €270 million mark ($ 292 million USD), which is 19% bump over the 2014.

French punters not only wagered more cash last year than have in previous years, they did a tremendous amount of that wagering from their mobile devices. Approximately 56% of legal French sports bets were placed from mobile devices. That a leap of 11% from 2014.

Of course not all the news coming out of the French online gambling market was good.

Reports indicate that the dive in online poker revenue that’s been going in since 2013 shows no signs of abating. Both revenue and the number of active of players were down by 4% from 2014.

While 2015 was a good year for French operators, it was also a good year for French tax collectors. The revenue gains the industry saw in 2015 put them in a higher tax bracket, which means the French government grabbed about 34% of that 40% revenue leap.

DFS Nightmare Continues as Texas Calls it ‘Illegal Gambling’

Texas is the latest US State to ban daily fantasy sports (DFS) because they constitute, “illegal gambling.” That means that, as of this writing, about 25% of the US population cannot legally play DFS.

Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General, delivered the industry’s latest ration of bad news in a no-nonsense statement saying:

Paid daily ‘fantasy sports’ operators claim they can legally operate as an unregulated house, but none of their arguments square with existing Texas law. Simply put, it is prohibited gambling in Texas if you bet on the performance of a participant in a sporting event and the house takes a cut.

Paxton went on to point out that in Texas, the traditional line between games of skill and games of chance is a little blurrier than in other states. In the Lone Star State, a game only requires partial chance to qualify as gambling and DFS more than meets that standard.

Not surprisingly, the very busy legal team at DraftKings sees the situation in a different light. In their own statement to the press they said DFS is perfectly legal in Texas, no matter what the AG says:

he Texas Legislature has expressly authorized games of skill, and daily fantasy sports are a game of skill. The Attorney General’s prediction is predicated on a fundamental misunderstanding of DFS.

There is, however, another twist in this story that could keep things interesting. According to the Dallas Morning News, Texas Lottery officials had been negotiating with DraftKings to come up with some sort of DFS-based lottery over the past year. While that deal never came to pass, it certainly will provide legal ammunition for DFS lawyers.

With Texas out of the picture for the time being and at least six other states banning DFS outright, just about one in four Americans are not able to legally play DFS.

Key Committee Recommends Legalizing Indian Cricket Wagering

A blue ribbon panel of Indian legal scholars recently made a recommendation that could shake up the sports betting market in a major way. The so-called, “Lhoda Committee,” suggested that India should implement regulated cricket wagering.

The three-member panel, which was headed by former Indian Chief Justice R.M. Lhoda, spent a year studying the viability of legal cricket wagering and issued its report on Monday saying:

We have suggested to the legislature for legalising betting with in-built mechanism and ensuring that players, match officials, administrator, team officials…will not be entitled to indulge in betting.

Of utmost concern to the panel was the possibility that legalized cricket wagering would trigger an avalanche of the kind of match fixing that’s marred international football in recent years. To that end, the Lhoda Committee recommended a series of checks and balances which includes several layers of regulatory watchdogs, an obudsman, and stiff penalties for anyone attempting to rig a match.

In that regard the panel was very serious and very specific saying match fixing is:

…neither pardonable nor a matter for regulation. The only way to deal with it is by making it a criminal offence punishable by law.

While the committee’s recommendations carry great weight, they are far from legally binding and the dawn of regulated Indian cricket wagering could still be a long way from becoming a reality.

That said, the prospect of 1.3 billion Indians, and their passion for cricket, getting access to legal betting markets is something that sports betting operators would welcome with open arms.

Daily Fantasy Sports Update: Industry Wins in NY and Massachusetts

The daily fantasy sports industry is in a fight for its life in courtrooms and state houses across the United States. While these battles are bruising, and costly, DFS operators have actually scored a couple big wins since the new year dawned.

The first big win came in New York state, where the state’s attorney general has been working to shut down daily fantasy sports altogether. Earlier this week, the New York Supreme Court granted a stay on the injunction imposed by Justice Manuel Mendez.

Under the terms of the new order, DraftKings and FanDuel can continue serving New York customers until May, when a complaint filed by NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is heard before the court.

While the ability to keep operating in New York is definitely a victory for the DFS industry, it might ring a little hollow. Besides the very real possibility that the sites might be barred from operating in New York, there’s also the fact that the entire DFS industry has been dragged through the mud during its first big year of operation.

This story is still developing and there’s almost certainly going to be more developments before the May hearing.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the DFS got a tepid legal endorsement in the form of a new white paper released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. While the paper doesn’t necessarily side with the daily fantasy sports industry, it suggests that the state simply decide one way or the other on the legality of daily fantasy sports.

That’s a common sense approach that could save the DFS industry a whole lot of headaches.

It seems safe to say that between now and the beginning of next football season, DFS industry lawyers will be very, very busy.

US Powerball Lottery Tops $1 Billion: What Are the Chances?

If you’ve recently visited the United States of America, you couldn’t have done so without hearing about the sky high Powerball lottery which, as of this writing, is hovering at $ 1.4 billion (USD).

That’s the largest jackpot in US lottery history and it’s certain to climb even higher as the week rolls on.

Anyone in the gambling business, especially the US-facing side, should have a soft spot for state sponsored lotteries because they unquestionably opened the door to other forms of regulated American gambling.

Of course most forms of legalized gambling offer much better odds of winning than the Powerball ever will. If you’re thinking that the odds of winning the Powerball are in your favor, here are a few things you might want to consider.

The Odds Are Never in Your Favor

What’s the worst casino table game wager you can come up with? At most casinos, that honor is held by Keno, which carries a whopping house edge of between 25%-29%, according to the Wizard of Odds.

That means the casino can expect to make about $ 25 off of every $ 100 that’s wagered on the game. Powerball players face a house edge that’s more like 50%. Would you ever take a wager like that in a casino?

Lump Sum or Annuity

So you’ve beaten the odds and now you’re holding the winning ticket in your hands. That means you have to choose whether to take that cash in a lump sum or an annuity.

If you take the lump sum, that $ 1.3 billion turns into around $ 868 million. Once the Federal and state governments take their share, you’ll only be sitting on a mere $ 486 million.

If you take the annuity, you’ll get around $ 49 million up front, and another $ 35 million (give or take) every year for the next few decades.

Which option you should actually go with depends on how good you are at investing, and not blowing, your new found fortune.

Beating the Curse

Speaking of new found fortune, it might not be all good news for you. You could fall prey to the dreaded, “lottery curse.” That curse has driven more than 70% of all lottery winners into bankruptcy within seven years of cashing in the winning ticket.

Money, it turns out, doesn’t necessarily buy happiness.

Regardless, with your odds at somewhere around 292.2 million to one, this is a problem you probably won’t have to worry about.

Golden Tiger Casino in Hot Water Over Misleading E-Mail

The Golden Tiger Casino, an online operator based out of Malta, is in hot water this week over a bonus e-mail UK advertising watchdogs say is very misleading.

According to published reports, the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint recently about an deposit bonus e-mail a Brit had received from the company. The e-mail offer purported to offer a massive bonus in text which read:

Limited time offer! Mobile users get 30 free spins. No deposit required. Plus £ 1500 in welcome bonuses. Click here to claim now…if you win, you get to keep it.

So far, so good. Right?

The problem the consumer had came a little further in the body of the e-mail where it was mentioned that:

…deposit is required to claim your winnings.

While this sort of offer seems pretty standard to those familiar with the online gambling industry, and was shielded by a standard, “terms and conditions may apply,” clause, that wasn’t good enough for the ASA. In their view, the fine print of the T&C was placed a few too many clicks away from the actual offer for their liking.

In a statement of their own, the ASA countered saying:

We acknowledged that the email stated ‘terms and conditions may apply’, but we understood from Apollo that consumers were presented with a hyperlink to the terms and conditions terms via a hyperlink from the promotion’s landing page. the ASA finding reads. We therefore considered that the terms and conditions did apply and furthermore, that they were presented to consumers two clicks away from the email. The email should therefore have stated that terms and conditions applied (rather than that they ‘may apply’) and should have included all conditions which might have affected a consumer’s decision to take up the offer.

Despite their authoritative tone, the ASA was ultimately prepared to forgive and forget. As it stands, the Golden Tiger Casino won’t face any fines or other punishments over the matter.

Oklahoma Indian Tribe Set to Launch International Poker Site

An Oklahoma Indian tribe is breaking new ground in the North American tribal gaming market by launching an international online poker site.

According to newsOK.com the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, which is located located in the central part of the state and has about 800 members, is shooting for a 2016 launch date for www.pokertribe.com.

The site will initially offer poker games to international players, as well as residents of New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware and would run on a platform provided by Universal Entertainment Group (UEG). Tribal officials say that plans are in the works to offer blackjack, pull tabs, and other casino games in the near future.

As the Iowa press forward this venture, they’ll be charting new territory for the American tribal gaming industry, and they’ll be doing it with the blessing of the Oklahoma legal system.

Late last year, the Oklahoma Cheyene and Arapaho Tribes attempted to launch the same site, but their plan to share revenue from the project ran afoul of the Department of Interior (DOI). The DOI, which has jurisdiction over tribal gaming, said the plan required changes to the tribal gaming compact. At that point, the interested parties walked away from the deal.

When the Cheyene and Arapaho Tribes dropped out, UEG approached the Iowa with the deal, which received approval from an Oklahoma arbitrator who said:

…use of the Internet is merely using technology to play covered games as a way to increase tribal revenues. It does not extend or restrict the scope of the games and does not amend the compact in any way.

When it goes live, pokertribes.com will be the first online gambling operation from a US tribal gaming interest.

New York AG Demands Full Refunds for Daily Fantasy Sports Players

Just when it looked like things couldn’t get much worse for the daily fantasy sports industry, the New York State attorney general Eric Schneiderman has thrown a new set of worries their way.

He’s demanding that Draft Kings and Fan Duel refund every penny the New York-based players have lost on their sites. $ 5,000 per New York player.

If it comes to pass, the Empire State’s punishment could be very expensive for the DFS business. According to ESPN.com, at least 600,000 New York residents have lost a total of nearly $ 200 million on the two sites.

Schneiderman’s latest approach to the DFS battle comes after a December 4 attempt to shut the two sites out of New York State entirely was overruled by an appeals court.

He’s now moved his anti-DFS strategy to focus on a subject that’s near and dear to the mainstream online gambling industry, deposit bonuses. In the eyes of the NY AG, deposit bonuses constitute fraud because a $ 200 deposit bonus would really only yield a player $ 8 and those $ 8 would unlock only after the player spent $ 5,000.

Schneiderman also suggests that DFS sites are engaging in deceptive advertising by showing player winnings in their ads, but only showing their gross winnings. He says a more accurate ad would deduct the amount the player lost before their big check wins. (Only about 11% of NY DFS players are net winners.)

For their parts, both Fan Duel and Draft Kings representatives’ have called the NY suit, “meritless,” and plan to fight it vigorously.

The two sides are due to square off in a New York courtroom on January 4 where a judge will decide whether DFS sites will continue to be allowed to operate in New York State.
