Phil Ivey Blames Borgata, Booze and Breasts in Baccarat Defense

Phil Ivey and the Borgata Hotel and Casino are locked in a blame game over who was taking advantage of whom the night he won $ 9.6 million playing mini-baccarat.

The folks at the Borgata say Ivey was using an elaborate form of advantage play called, edge sorting, to cheat them out of the money. Ivey says that not only was he not cheating that night, but that the Borgata was actually using high end booze and beautiful babes to take advantage of him.

It’s a novel defense that less-skilled gamblers dream of employing, but might not hold much water in the New Jersey courtroom where the drama is playing out.

In a deposition filed earlier this week, Ivey elaborated on how exactly the Borgata took advantage of him with babes and booze while he was busying memorizing small defects on the backs of playing cards to increase his odds of winning big:

It distracts you from your playing. I mean, anything they can do to give themselves an advantage. Everyone knows that alcohol impairs your judgment, and they offer that, and they have the pretty cocktail waitresses and they’re all very flirty. They’re talking to you, you know. I got quite a few numbers.

Borgata officials haven’t responded publicly to Ivey’s claims, but the complimentary drinks and attractive waitresses he describes are a mainstay of every casino from Mississippi to Macau.

It’s worth noting that Ivey lost a similar lawsuit against Crockford’s Casino in London. In that case he won – and was forced to return – around $ 12.5 million in baccarat winnings.

Ivey has repeatedly defended his edge sorting strategy and maintains casinos should be doing more to protect themselves before the games starts, not after he’s racked up massive winnings.

Paddy Power and Betfair Set to Merge in £5 Billion Deal

Paddy Power and Betfair are merging their operations in a deal that’s creating one of the largest gambling companies in the world.

Under the terms of the deal, Paddy Power would retain control of 52% of the newly formed company, while Betfair would control the remaining 48%. All told, the new Paddy Power Betfair group deal is worth a little over £5 billion ($ 5.64 USD) and is projected to generate around £1.1 billion ($ 1.24 billion) during its first year of operation.

So why would two well-established brands that both seem to be doing well on their own want to merge? According to statements made to the press by company officials, it’s all about scale.

Betfair CEO, Breon Corcoran (who will also act as CEO of the new company) described the logic behind the move as follows saying:

We fundamentally believe this industry is all about scale. By putting together two distinct but phenomenally strong brands, we’ll have a market leading position in the UK, Ireland, Australia and in the United States.

Paddy Power CFO Cormac McCarthy echoed those statements saying:

The scale and capability is unsurpassed and would leave us in a much better place to compete in our current markets, where competition is intense.

While there’s no word yet on how the deal impacts casino affiliates but investors were very happy with the new arrangement. Betfair stock rose 18% on news of the deal, while Paddy Power stock rose 17%.

Under terms of the deal, both brands are expected to retain elements of their original identities, so don’t think this means the end of Paddy Power’s controversial, but always interesting, advertising campaigns.

DraftKings Lands UK Betting License

DraftKings is a step closer towards its goal of daily fantasy sports domination now that it’s landed a coveted UK gaming license. It’s a huge move for the daily fantasy sports giant that could change the face of the DFS industry on the Continent.

According to published reports, DraftKings received word of the license approval on Monday and moved quickly to implement its UK strategy.

A big part of that particular strategy revolves around the hiring of gambling industry veteran Jeffrey Haas as its Chief International Officer. Haas comes to DraftKings from Bwin.Party where he served as Director of Poker and will work out of DraftKings’ London office.

In press release issued by the company, Haas shared his thoughts on DraftKings and their role in the rapidly expanding DFS vertical saying:

Daily Fantasy Sports is a growing category outside North America, and we have a tremendous opportunity to engage sports fans around the world. We will look to maintain our leadership position in the Daily Fantasy Sports industry – creating innovative games across the most sports, providing our players with elite customer service and fostering mutually-beneficial relationships with our partners.

Current DraftKings CEO, Jason Robins described the expansion as a, “milestone,” and he’s right on the money. The move into the European DFS market is the fruit DraftKings’ aggressive marketing efforts, and the impact they’ve had on venture capitalists – whose chase made the UK move possible.

Even better, DraftKings is now poised to make a huge dent in the UK market before Fan Duel – the world’s biggest DFS site and DraftKings’ number one competitor – has a chance at UK punters.

DraftKings expects their UK operation to be up and running by the end of Q4 2015.

Wisconsin Judge Ruling: ‘Poker is a Game of Chance’

A Wisconsin judge is the latest official to weigh in on whether poker is a game of skill or a game of chance, and he’s fallen squarely on the side of chance.

Circuit Judge Richard G. Nice issued his ruling in a Dane County, Wisconsin courtroom in response to a case filed by the Poker Player’s Alliance (PPA). The case itself, filed on behalf of a poker player named Mark “P0ker HO” Kroon, and legal fees in the case were paid by a group of Wisconsin-based poker players.

Under current Wisconsin law, poker is still defined as a, “game of chance,” and is lumped in with other illegal gambling such as sports betting. Judge Nice’s ruling reaffirmed that notion, but left the door open for the PPA to bump their case up to the next legal level saying:

I certainly enjoyed this case, not so much from the point of view of the legal issues, which I don’t think are all that difficult, but certainly the consideration of poker is always entertaining for me, even though it’s not always quite so entertaining at the poker table…I’ve got to say that poker is such a rich topic on so many levels. It’s as much a part of the American fabric, I think, as baseball and apple pie, but having said that, I can’t ignore the law here, and the law unfortunately, to use a poker analogy, is a stacked deck against the plaintiffs here.

Nice went on to say that the PPA should seek relief for their claim at the Circuit Court and, eventually, the Supreme Court.

It should be noted that the Wisconsin ruling was not tied to any specific specific legislation and, as of this writing, the state is not currently considering any online gambling bills.

Can ‘No Rake’ Daily Fantasy Sports Sites Survive?

Can no rake daily fantasy sports sites survive long enough to actually make money? Can they survive long enough to get acquired by big name players? Can they even survive long enough to pay out their own players?

These are all very serious questions that are popping up along with the meteoric rise daily fantasy sports sites. They’re also questions that any casino affiliate who is thinking about promoting a fantasy sports should be considering. as well.

Why Do DFS Sites Go ‘No Rake’?

Most DFS sites use a rake model like you’d find at any online or land-based poker room and take a cut of the total prize pot from each game.

Over time, that adds up to a lot of cash and is how sites like DraftKings and Fan Duel are able to post such impressive revenue each quarter. But some sites, particular those that are interested in getting acquired by big name sports sites like Yahoo! and CBS Sports choose a different operating model.

The operators of these sites would rather throw their venture capital money at marketing and player acquisition in order to make themselves attractive to buyers. That’s what Dan Ziernicki, owner of FantasyUp did.

Ziernicki, who funded his site with $ 3.5 million he earned playing at FanDuel, shared his strategy with Gambling911 saying:

The big vision in this industry is that the players like ESPN, Yahoo! and CBS, are going to enter this space once legalities of online gambling clears up. What we’re really focusing on is being the technological company for the future. To be able to process large amounts of data in real time. We are not there yet, but we are already able to handle the biggest daily fantasy sports day ever.

Unfortunately for Ziernicki, CBS and Yahoo! weren’t interested in his site and now his players are saying he’s late with tournament prize payments.

In short, the no rake DFS model is a high risk, high reward proposition that could leave operators and affiliates either very flush, or simply holding the bag.

Spanish Online Gambling Revenue Takes Big Q2 Hit

Spanish online gambling revenues took a big hit in Q2 2015 with nearly every sector reporting losses.

A report issued by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), and reported on by CalvinAyre.com, laid bare a dismal few months for Spanish facing operators.

Across the board, Spanish online gambling revenue was down a massive 6.3%. Licensed operators pulled in just €66.7 million ($ 74 million USD) from March-May.

Things were so bad that even the Spanish gaming verticals that seemed to be thriving still wound up as losers. Sports betting sites, for example, saw player stakes rise a solid 51%. Unfortunately, Iberian punters came out on top enough to drive revenue down by 2.3%.

On the bright side of the sports betting sector, live betting revenues actually showed some gain with operators reporting €22.3 million ($ 24.7 million USD) coming in the door.

Things were no better on the normally reliable poker end of the business. Revenue in that sector fell to just €14.4 million ($ 16 million) – that’s down 6.6% over the previous year.

The one bright spot for the industry as a whole came from the burgeoning casino sector. Thanks to the long-delayed introduction of slots, that particular sector saw revenue leap to €14.6 million ($ 16.22 million USD), up 59.1% from Q2 2014.

News that the Spanish online gambling industry is not particularly robust won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been following events in Spain over the past few years.

The Spanish government has seriously dragged its feet on gambling liberalization in a desperate bid to hang on to reliable tax revenue streams. In doing so, they’ve imposed a very oppressive licensing process and tax schedule on operators that’s clearly not paying off.

UK Online Poker Sites Raise Tournament Guarantees

Two UK online poker sites, 888Poker and PartyPoker are raising their guaranteed tournament payouts in a desperate effort to keep current players happy.

Here’s a look at what 888 and Party Poker are doing.

888 Guarantees and Pause Button

888Poker is a huge brand with a massive international footprint, but that hasn’t been enough to keep the company from having some pretty serious technical issues.

A plague of poorly timed system freezes have left hardcore players howling, and who could blame them?

Technicians at the massive operation have been working overtime to solve the problem and recently they came up with a pause button feature that’s designed to help preserve the integrity of tournament play.

The company is also pumping an additional $ 100,000 a month into additional prize guarantee money. All that fresh cash will be spread across a number of tournaments, including a $ 5,000 prize boost in their Sunday tournament.

PartyPoker Ups the Ante, Too

Over at PartyPoker, operators are throwing an additional $ 400,000 at boosting tournament guarantees over the next few months.

While PartyPoker’s been spared the sorts of technical problems that have been plaguing 888, they’re still having trouble hanging on to casual players. Company officials are hoping that throwing money at tournament guarantees will help keep newbies swimming in shark infested waters.

While these moves aren’t particularly risky they are expensive and there’s no guarantee that boosting tourney guarantees will even work.

But in the topsy turvy online poker world, sometimes operators wind up gambling as much as much as their players.

Google Rich Snippets Displays Betting Odds

Google is now featuring sports betting odds as rich snippets in its search results. It’s a move that’s every bit as intriguing as it is mysterious.

So far, there’s been no official word on why odds are turning up as rich snippets, or even if it’s a deliberate move on the part of the search giant.

What is clear is that sports betting rich snippets are an incredibly valuable prospect for sports betting affiliates who have optimized for snippets.

So far, the only sites that seem to be benefiting from the odds snippets are bigger operations that already enjoy prominent search rankings.

When it comes to American sports leagues, particularly the NFL and NBA, the big winner seems to be Vegasinsider.com, a massive operation that’s likely to have implemented very sophisticated SEO tactics.

For European sports, there doesn’t seem to be as clear cut a winner, though OddsChecker.com does produce a snippet for searches like, Madrid Real Odds.

Given the fact that relatively few sites are currently optimized for rich snippets, this new development could set off a land rush as operators and affiliates to grab a piece of this newly discovered online real estate.

The emergence of odds on Google snippets is definitely a positive for the sports betting industry.

At the same time, there’s no guarantee that it’s anything more than an algorithmic hiccup triggered by well-crafted odds tables. (And given Google’s tempestuous relationship with the gambling industry, that’s a likely possibility.)

PokerStars Lands Irish Sports Betting License

PokerStars is ready to take on every punter on the Emerald Isle now that it’s been issued a brand new Irish sports betting license. It’s a big move for PokerStars’ parent company Amaya Gaming and its embryonic sports betting division.

The newly issued license allows PokerStars to start accepting wagers on sporting events, but does no allow for either casino games or poker. That doesn’t, however, mean the company won’t have access to the Irish gambling market. Interested Irishmen will be able to access the company’s casino and poker products via a site operating under a Maltese license.

Though PokerStars has had limited sports betting for several months now, company officials concede that its impact on the bottom line has barely been a ripple in a very big pond. The addition of the Irish market should go a long ways towards turning that situation in a very different direction.

In a statement to the press, company’s managing director of sports betting told the media:

We’re very pleased to receive a license for our sports betting offering on PokerStars in Ireland. Our operation of poker, casino games, and now sports betting shows that players trust us to deliver a variety of games in a fun and exciting way. We look forward to building on this by operating under this new license.

The only thing clouding PokerStars’ Irish adventure is a boatload of potential competitors. Irish gaming authorities also issued licenses to Nektan, an operator with an eye on the mobile market.

All told, things should get very heated in the Irish internet gambling market in the months to come.

Daily Fantasy Sports Update: Draft Kings Signs MLB and Much More

Daily fantasy sports operators are gearing up for what should be their biggest season yet with new sponsors and a ridiculous amount of potential revenue.

If you’re thinking about dipping your toes in this rapidly expanding igaming vertical, here’s three deals (and potential deals) you’ll find very interesting.

DraftKings Lands MLB

DraftKings has inked a massive new sponsorship deal with 27 of the 30 Major League Baseball teams. (The Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Toronto Blue Jays had to bow out because DFS is illegal in those three places.)

As part of the arrangement, DraftKings will have access to a wealth of MLB content and statistics. This second point is particularly important because major league sports view their statistics feeds as a major source of revenue.

It also increases DraftKings’ status with the estimated 56 million Americans who play DFS baseball.

CBS Interactive Jumps On DFS

CBS Interactive has announced plans to offer DFS games and content on its SportsLine site. Besides daily fantasy baseball tournaments, the popular fantasy site will be offering a new DFS stats and content to its paid end-users.

CBS Interactive is a major player in the American fantasy sports market. That means their move into DFS could impact the market significantly when American football season rolls around.

Foxwoods Eyes DFS

Will DFS make the move to land-based casinos? That’s a question attendees at the upcoming Daily Fantasy Sports Expo in Miami are asking now that officials from Foxwoods casino will be attending the event.

While there’s been no announcement from Foxwoods about a potential DFS product, it seems as though someone at the company is at least exploring the option.

888 and Partypoker Address Online Poker Player Concerns

888 and Partypoker are taking steps to insure their online poker players are as happy as possible ahead of the two operators’ potential merger.

The new policies are aimed at keeping established customers in place, thereby reducing expensive customer acquisition costs. While there’s been no official word that the new policies are related to 888′s bid to acquire bwin.party, any effort to keep customers happy during the transition is probably just good business.

‘Poker for the People’

Over at Partypoker, player retention efforts are focused on an internal policy that was not exactly a big hit with players; withdrawal fees. As of this week, the company is discontinuing its two-year experiment with the unpopular charge.

While the company is no longer charging withdrawal fees for funds housed in Visa, MasterCard and bank accounts, players can still expect to pay the fee for cash in their e-wallets.

Company officials say they’re still negotiating with e-wallet firms about removing the unpopular fees but, for now, they’re not going anywhere.

PartyPoker has also revamped its loyalty in response to player feedback.

888 Hits Pause on Tournaments

888 tournament players have weathered a sea of frustrations due to connectivity issues on the site while tournaments are actually in progress.

To combat the issues, which Lee Davy over at CalvinAyre.com suspects are part of a DDOS attack, the company has instituted a new tournament pause feature.

The tournament pause feature is similar to the broadcast delay used by television stations and, in theory, should allow the company time to address the issue without disrupting play.

Bacarrat Slump Hits Las Vegas Strip

Gaming revenue at casinos on the Las Vegas Strip was down a whopping 8% in June based on lousy numbers from the Strips’s vaunted baccarat parlors.

The baccarat slump brought down revenue for the fiscal year down 1.6 , according to numbers released by the Nevada Gaming Commission and reported on by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Over the past few years baccarat has been a serious cash cow on the Strip and has consistently ranked as the top earning table, ahead of more mainstream table games like blackjack. Most of that growth came on the heels of an influx of newly rich Asian whales who toss cash freely in elaborate baccarat parlors the general public will never get to see.

Unfortunately for Vegas whale hunters, a crackdown on corruption in China has put a damper on the Vegas baccarat party. Last quarter baccarat brought in just $ 64.7 million to Las Vegas casinos. That’s down 53.7% from the previous year.

The baccarat bust isn’t the only bad news coming from the Vegas Strip this fiscal year. Taking baccarat out of the picture, Las Vegas casino revenue would still be down about 3% for the month of June and down 1.6% for the first six months of 2015.

Analysts suggest that Vegas’ trouble with the popular game is part of a worldwide trend that’s having a major impact on any property – land-based or digital – where Asian whales congregate.

Fortunately for the city of Las Vegas, most Strip resorts have very diverse revenue streams that rely much less on gambling than they once did. J.P. Morgan gaming analyst Joe Greff explained to the press why Vegas will probably be all right, despite the baccarat slump saying:

Overall, we continue to think the Las Vegas Strip can generate low-to mid-single (revenue per available room) and visitation growth, though we expect the market to continue to experiencing volatility in baccarat play given a likely slowdown in Chinese player.

All told, the State of Nevada brought in around $ 48.7 million in gaming taxes for the month of June.
